Christensen, Janice ...Hi Kermit & Class of 55!

I have completed my move and now have E-Mail at home on HotMail.  My new E address is jhmaltese@hotmail.com

You might guess from the address that I have a Maltese dog.  She is wonderful and will be 1 year old on Sunday. I decided on HotMail so I will be able to access my mail from anywhere.  I won't bore all of you with a long bio but was married for 28 years and am now divorced.  My son graduated from Gustavus College in financial economics and is a vice president of Piper Jaffray.  He has a son who is 6 and a daughter who is 5.  They are both in school and this "Nana" thinks they are extremely smart and cute!!  My daughter has one girl who is in her second year at Hamline University on an honors scholarship and is majoring in international studies.  She says she plans to attend law school and is interested in international trade law.  She is in about every committee at Hamline and an officer in the young Democrats.  She met Paul Wellstone the night before the plane crash and has also met Mr. Mondale.  She also has been a competitive dancer and has danced all over the US.  She works part time at Nordstrom at the Mall of America.

I have worked at hospitals, clinics and was out of the medical field for 10 years working as the Human Resource Manager for an electronics manufacturing company.  Kermit, you will be interested to know it was Banner Engineering and I was in Aberdeen in 1989 to help start up the facility in your community.  When the plane was landing, I said I had forgotten how flat SD is!!

You are great for all the work you are doing for Project 55.  Homecoming would be a great time for our reunion.  I haven't been in Watertown since the 10 year reunion.  Jackie T. said she would be willing to go with me if I would like to prior to the big 50.  It will be a lot of fun to return to see how it has changed after all these years.  Jackie had a coffee party for 5 of us in October and we were able to talk like there had not been all those years without contact.  I had met up with Jackie a few years back at an Occupational Health conference, but with our busy lives, we did not touch base again until she had us for coffee.  I had forgotten that Terry Redlin was in our class and did not connect that he is THAT Terry!!  Way to go Terry, your work is wonderful.

...Hi Kermit and fellow classmates! Here's a little about me for the past 50 years.

After high school I started farming. I was in the NationalGuard for 6 years and worked part time at the SD Livestock Sale Barn for several years. I married Ruth Cordell (Class of '57 ). We have four children; Karlene(Gailen) Geffre a graduate of Presentation College employed as an RN in Aberdeen. Chris (Carla) a graduate of SDSU and farming with us. Stephanie a graduate of Nettleton College and employed at Walmart in Watertown and Becky (Wayne) Yeager a graduate of SDSU and employed at Premier Bankcard in Sioux Falls.

We have five grandchildren, one of which was delivered by Dr. Tage Born (Kermit's daughter).

I have been farming ever since graduation. In January of 2003 I collected my first Social Security check...and guess what...am still farming. In June of 2003 I had bypass (5) surgery and am doing fine.

Hope to see everyone at the 50th class reunion! ...Gene

Czech, Marie Beckman (DECEASED 1-15-2010) ...The summer after graduation I worked at Gambles in Watertown. In September I journeyed to Bakersfield, CA where Bob and I married. Bob had joined the Navy in June 1954 and was stationed at China Lake Naval Air Station. I worked for Civil Service until he was discharged in June of 1957. We then moved down the road to Lancaster, CA. Bob joined the Air Force and we moved to Malmstrom AFB, Great Falls, MT. In 1959 Bob was reassigned to Hahn AB, Germany. Our son Robert was born while we were in Hahn. We were in Hahn until July 1962 at which time we were off to Luke AFB in Phoenix. Our daughter, Lizabeth, was born in August 1963. I did some child care work while we were in Phoenix. We were on the move again in September 1965 this time to Sheppard AFB, TX. We were at Sheppard for only a short year when we moved to Perrin AFB at Dennison, TX. Bob was an instructor on the F-102 and T-37 aircraft.

In March 1968, Bob was assigned to Clark AFB, in the Philippines. He continued his role as an instructor while at Clark. Robert, Liz and I joined him in August of 1968. What a fine tour of duty. I had a full time maid and a house boy to take care of our big house. What a “Lady of Leisure” I was.

On New Year’s Day 1970 we returned to the good old USA and lived in Dennison, TX. Bob was assigned to Ubon AFB, Thailand. On his return to the states, we moved to Scott AFB, IL until 1974.

Now that the children were older I started working outside the home. I was a grocery bagger at the commissary on the base. One fun job. In 1974 Bob was assigned to Andrews AFB and worked on the presidential aircraft. I worked for civil service working at the commissary as a checker, moved on as pay clerk for the reserve forces, and finally ended up working as a medical supply technician.

Bob retired from the service in June 1980. We moved to Rapid City, SD. I worked at Ellsworth AFB doing some cost accounting. A couple of years later I was fortunate to get a position with the Ellsworth fire department as a firefighter and fire inspector. I remained with the fire department until my retirement in January 1998.

We now have two granddaughters, one 16 and one 14 and a grandson age 11. Since my retirement, Bob and I have traveled around the country spending our winters in Florida and our summers in Rapid City and on Lake Oahe helping keep the walleye population on an even level…..

Dahl, Richard ...20 years ago Richard's daughter Sherry lives in Hermosa, SD and reports her dad is now single and living in Colorado. Richard frequently uses her address and does not have e-mail.

Her address & phone number are: P.O. Box 321 Hermosa, SD 57744 (605) 255-4870. Her e-mail is HalleysHouse@aol.com

Davey, Gerold ...After WHS he attended SDSC (a college then; now SDSU University) for one year. Entered the Air Force and spent four years sitting on mountains looking for Russian aircraft. Returned to Watertown and then entered the Navy's Submarine Service.

(Ed. Note... I remember talking to Gerold some years ago about the Navy's "Silent Service" & a related book called the "Hunt for Red October"…it was a most interesting converstion about the realities of the book. Gerold said I could read more about the Navy's secret missions in another book titled “Blind Man’s Bluff”... the History Channel later produced a TV documentary of the same title...It's pretty accurate with several interviews with crew members about their missions and a "must see" for those interested in submarine stories)

Gerold retired from the Navy in 1980, returned to Watertown again and hung out as a maintenance guy at the Watertown Mall. He retired again in 1998 and says he has been moving around a lot since then...and reports he just returned from a 10 week trip out west which included a reunion with his old submarine crew..

Note.. We recently found more details about Gerold's sub (Halibut), its crew, their "Cold War" espionage missions, and its citations...

Davis, Leola Boomgaarden (DECEASED) Obituary

DeWall, Dean ...We received this update from Dean in July-05..

Man, I can’t believe 50 years have come and gone. Time really flies when you’re having fun, doesn’t it!

After spending two years at USD, I finished college at the State University of North Dakota in Fargo. I majored in economics, specializing in operations analysis and accounting. In the meantime, Judee (Peters) and I were married in 1960 while I was finishing school. After that time, we moved to the Marshall, Minn. area (Lynd) where our three children were born.

Since my father owned and operated grain elevators in Minnesota, North and South Dakota, I spent the next ten years managing grain elevators in all three states. Actually, I managed the elevators that Terry R. painted in his rendition of Rauville. The elevators looked a little better then, but the pheasants didn’t change a bit.

When emphysema began to set in due to grain dust, I had an opportunity to sign on with the American Heart Association and traveled the US assisting with public education and organization projects. Great job, except I was never home and the kids were getting older every week and I didn’t know them.

In 1975 I was offered a job as Chief Financial Officer of a Community Mental Health Center. I fell in love with the mental health system and have been working in it and as a consultant specializing in mental health information systems, quality assurance, administration and finance for the past 30 years.

When the Director of Mental Health in South Dakota moved to Jacksonville to become the Executive Director of a Mental Health Center there, I came down here to help with an expansion project and never left. It’s a lot more fun running on a beach than in a snow bank or on an icy road. Except for a short period to design, build and open a child/adolescent crisis hospital in Mississippi, we have lived here ever since. Judee and I both enjoyed careers in health care management.

Over the years, I have played my horn every day until we moved to Florida (it was time to quit), was a scoutmaster for ten years, was head usher at the Methodist Church for 20 years, taught Sunday school, and all kinds of other crazy stuff.

The arrival of our three children, Peter, Kristin and Anne were really happy days! Two neat sons-in-law and five grandchildren (smarter than the average, of course) complement our little family. The saddest time ever was the day we buried our 42- year-old son in 2003!

When our daughters graduated from college, they followed us to Florida and we all live within a couple miles from the Atlantic Ocean and about as close to each other. That means Judee and I get to see our grandchildren as often as we want. Our greatest achievement was to have our children become our best friends, and our future objective is to repeat that achievement with our grandchildren.

I know I will have to go back to work again, because since retirement I have only played about 36 holes of golf. When I worked, I played all the time. After we retired, I built a large addition to our home. Working with Habit for Humanity takes up some of my time. Through Hartfelt Ministries, I spend about two days a week as a volunteer, helping elderly persons remain in their homes. This includes everything from cleaning, laundry, home remodeling, handicapped ramp construction and grocery shopping. It is lots of fun and gives me something to do.

We just spent a week camping at Lake Kampeska. Great time and a great place. We spend about three or four weeks a year in Watertown between visiting my mother (94 years old), hunting and the past few years, family member funerals. My running has fared a lot better than my golf and I still maintain a 30 mile per week schedule. We’re healthy, happy and glad to be able to celebrate a 50 year reunion with you. I have attached a couple of pictures for you. They are recent. The family picture was taken near the butterfly garden at Memorial Park last week. You can tell who Judee and I are, but Anne’s family is behind me (Peder, Anne, and Gretchen, Hans and Kai) and Kristin’s family is behind her (Joseph, Kristin, Steve and Laura).

Well, that’s it. 50 years all summed up in a page and a half. See y’all in September. Go Arrows!

DeWall, Sharon Andre (DECEASED) This update was in the process of being completed at the time of Sharon’s death (3-Jan-05). Her daughter, Victoria requested we include her unfinished "bio" in our memorial & reunion materials.

"My name is Sharon (DeWall) Andre’. I have been to the last couple of reunions and am really looking forward to the 50th. Just a brief synopsis of what I have been up to since graduation. After high school, I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1956, I nightclubbed in San Francisco (but not like today’s standards), attended charm school, I married, had two children ( Jeff and Victoria, both married), divorced (consequently, raising both children on my own), worked, traveled, finished college, have one grandchild (Jeffrey, and recently retired.

I have had many jobs including working for a title company, working at a donut shop, working as a dental assistant, medical assistant, medical stenographer, secretary for a development company, a teacher’s assistant in an elementary school, as well as an administrative clerk at the local police department from which I am now retired.

There are many things I enjoy doing and that I consider fun and interesting: such as, reading, traveling, dancing, going to baseball games ( Go A’s!), bowling, wining and dining, plays, museums, orchestra and opera performances, watching British comedy, ice skating, snow skiing, gymnastics, performing river rafting in Juneau, Alaska, and horseback riding in Mexico." ...20 years ago

Dummer, Jeanette Reed

Dunn, Darlene Wiles ...I have enjoyed reading about our classmates lives since 1955. I will try to make our life sound as good. Jerry (class of '51) and I started our life in Beloit, Wisconsin where we lived for 20 years.  Jerry left the company in Wisconsin after 10 years and went to work for a company in Rockford, IL for the next 10 years.  That company then decided to relocate to Sarasota, Florida. This meant a big move and job transfer.  We have been here ever since. Not a bad place to have been transferred to.

Jerry has been retired for the last 8 years.  He worked his entire work life for 2 companies as a mechanical engineer.  I taught primary grade school in Wisconsin. Retired when we moved to Florida. Thought that is what you did when in Florida.

We have 4 children, 3 boys and 1 girl, all married with 5 grand children.  Our oldest son Mike, lives in Wisconsin, only daughter Suzanne lives 3 blocks from us, next comes Scott in the Atlanta area and youngest Kurt in Orlando.  The best part of the age we are in is that our 4 oldest grandchildren come for 2 weeks each summer for "grandma camp."  We take advantage of all the area has to offer and have only fun.  Great memories.

Jerry and I have done many things all the other classmates have mentioned travel, hobbies etc.  Our big passion is golf. We both play several times a week year around.

Both of us have family in South Dakota, Jerry's in Sioux Falls and mine in Watertown. We make the trip back quite regularly, in fact will be going this summer around July 4th. We were back for Jerry's 50th class reunion.  He had the best time.  I look forward to mine....Darlene

Ellwein, Patricia Tanaka ...Following graduation from WHS in 1955 I went to Brookings and enrolled at South Dakota State University. Wanda Tesch (Lightfield) was my roommate. I graduated in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in home economics journalism. I married John Tanaka on August 14, 1959. He was teaching chemistry at SDSU and we lived in Brookings for four years. High points of life in Brookings were the births of Peter Mark on July 20, 1960 and Paul Michael on September 2, 1962. In the fall of 1963, we moved to Pittsburgh, PA where John did a two-year post-doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh. We moved to Storrs, Ct. in 1965, where John became a member of the faculty of the Chemistry Department of the University of Connecticut. I had finished the course work and taken my orals for a Masters degree in language skills before we left Brooking and then finally finished the language exam and got the degree the first year we were in Storrs.

I worked as a reporter for seven years for our local paper, and then left when John completed a one-year sabbatical at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island. When we returned, I had a number of part-time jobs until I started as assistant university transfer credit evaluator. I started this job in 1979 and continue in this capacity today.

As a volunteer, I’ve been active in the Boy Scouts when the boys were younger, the league of women voters, and my church—would you believe I am still teaching Sunday school? John is still teaching chemistry here at UConn and has had a book of his laboratory experiments published.

We bought a farm near Revillo, SD in the mid-80’s near our college friends, Jim and Bert Johnson. Their son, Mark, does the real work, but John calls weekly and makes several trips during the summer to “help out”. My mother still owns a home in Watertown, but this may be the last year she lives in it, as she is finding it very comfortable to leave everyday stuff up to my sister Cindy, who lives in Edina, MN

Our son Peter graduated from UConn and stayed on as an officer in the university police department. He and his wife, Lisa, built a log house in the next town. They have two children, John Edward, almost 10, and Stephanie Elizabeth, age 5.

Paul graduated from Iowa State University and joined the Navy. He is a pilot, flying the A-6 and has been deployed in both the Pacific and Atlantic. He married a Navy dentist, Marta, and they have two boys, Tyler, 7, and Joey, 4. Paul left the Navy to fly for United Air Lines. Marta still has several years left to finish her 20 years for retirement.

Hope to see some of you in Watertown. We will be there July 2-8. I enjoy the e-mail, but don’t reply because it comes into John’s office……I am off for the summer and reduced to using old fashioned stuff…..like pens!

Endres, John (DECEASED)

Endres, Patricia Maag

Enger, Barbara Briggs (DECEASED)
...Deceased

England, Colleen Sherer As of 1-24-2003…..I’ve been taking a break from substitute teaching but will probably be back at it later this spring. I’ve been doing long-terms for most of my subbing. But after this last one, decided I’m way too old to do the 7-5 job every day. But, I am unable to permanently retire as I’m going for the “Oldest Substitute “ in the Guiness’ Book. Sure hope there is a record to break of all of this is for nothing. I do some sewing, quilting, stamping, cross stitch, and trying to limit other crafts.

Mick retired from the FBI in ’89 and is enjoying retirement with a heart attack or two or three mixed in…..but he comes out of it just fine. He now has a pacemaker.

We have a daughter in Olympia, WA, and a grandson 18yrs. Karla, 39, does bookkeeping for the surgery floor in St. Peter’s Hospital. Our son Pat, 32, was married in Kauai, last year. He is such a good son or I probably wouldn’t have visited there. I’d like them to celebrate their anniversary in Australia. They live in LaQuinta, CA. He manages a store that sells and supplies items to the golf courses. He was an assistant groundskeeper at a couple of golf courses before going with his current company.

We moved to “God’s County”, Rapid City in 1975. Why do west river kids go to college east river????? If I had known how grand it was out here, I would have headed this way a looooooong time ago.

Eustice Barbara Hebeler Living in Post Falls ID. Hopes she can make the 50th class reunion. Barb gets back to Watertown, sometimes on a monthly basis to visit her Mom. She is in the Prairie Lakes Nursing Home as a result of a stroke. Barb gave us two e-mail addresses….her son’s (an e-mail that works) and hers that apparently does not work all the time. We are looking forward to hearing more about what Barb and her family have been doing the past 50 years.
