Population...according to the US Census taken in 2000; South Dakota ranked 46th nationally with a head count of 754,844.

With a land area of 75,885 square miles, it has a density of less than 10 people per sq. mile; as contrasted with the national average of 80.
Products... the state ranks among the top FIVE nationally in production of several meat and grain products, including Durum Wheat, Alfalfa, Oats, Millet, Flaxseed, Beef Cows, Sheep & Lambs for consumer markets.

It's the nations top producer of Bison, and ranks second in Sunflower seeds and Honey.
Geography...Harney Peak, in the Black Hills, is the highest point between the Rocky Mountains and the French Alps. More than 70,000 people hike to its 7,242 foot summit each year.
Mining...The deepest mine in the United States, the Homestake gold mine (now closed), is in the Black Hills of South Dakota, near the town of Lead. Its shaft plunges more than 8,000 feet beneath the surface.

The mine has been an integral part of the Black Hills, as well as part of American mining history, for 124 years. The mine has produced approximately 40 million ounces of gold while in operation.
