Taecker, Norma Jean Smith ...Thanks for working on the class roster…I do have an e-mail but need to find it…After graduation I went to Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis and received my RN. I married in 1960 to Bill Smith. We lived in Sioux Falls for 1 year then moved to Minneapolis. I worked until our 1st son was born and then took 3 ½ years off …and then back to work for another 7 years…then another vacation for 26 years. I have now been working in the local nursing home for 7 years. Still love it. We have 4 children, three boys and one girl. We have 7 grandchildren, 1 great Grandchild, 2 step-grandchildren. We live very close all of them so on any given day I could have 1-5 little kids. Expecting 2 more in July.

I still work and plan to continue for about 1 ½ years…it will be fun having classmates addresses. I lost my address book and so have lost contact. We do get to South Dakota as my family is still there…

Tassler, Delverna Erickson ...Received a nice note from her…she is still working at a "Jones of NY" store and lives in Watertown, Wisconsin...(does not have e-mail)

Tesch, Wanda Lightfield ...Received a short note from Wanda…she retired on September 1, 2002 and her husband (Bill) retired in December. Wanda taught for 40+ years. They have a summer home on Blue Dog Lake (just outside Waubay, SD) and spend the summer (April thru September) at the lake.

Thomas, Jacqueline Teisberg ...Dear Kermit and WHS friends. You are all friends!  Isn’t it great to be 65 years old!!  We are all here!  I am not sure how much of a biography I am supposed to write, but I hope you aren’t too bored.  You can skip over that part.

So, here goes...following graduation from WHS I worked at the Brown Clinic in Watertown for one year.  I worked as the bookkeeper, which in hindsight is such a joke, as I hate math.  But, it worked out all right and I learned a lot.

In the fall of 1956, I began at St. John’s School of Nursing in Huron.  The old three year program.  I graduated in August 1959 and was married two weeks after graduation.  We lived in Huron for two years where my husband (at that time) finished school at Huron College.  My daughter, Erin was born while we lived there.  We moved to Minneapolis in August 1961 where my ‘ex’ got his Masters and PhD degrees at the University of Minnesota.  In 1963, my daughter Lisa was born. In 1965, we moved to Overland Park, Kansas where he took his first job at the VA Hospital  While we lived there my daughter Vija was born in 1967.  We moved back to Minneapolis in October 1970

In March 1977 I was divorced.  By this time I had begun working on my Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Augsburg College here in Minneapolis and graduated in 1980. Following graduation I worked at a large hospital here for three years.

My friends here were eager for me to meet a special guy, and their vigilance paid off when in October 1983 they introduced me to John, who became my husband in June 1984.  John is an actuary and retired in 1997.

Our world fell apart November 28, 1984, when my daughter Lisa was killed in an ice related car accident on her way to school at the University of Minnesota.  We had freezing rain the night before, someone switched lanes in front of her and after touching her brake she slid sideways into the back end of a highway repair truck parked on the shoulder.  She was 21 years old.

We have all moved on the best we could.  Erin and Vija went away to graduate and under-graduate school.  They both returned to Minneapolis to live and work.  Lisa’s death was significant in their decisions.  I am so happy they live here!

When I left working at the hospital, I worked as an Occupational Health Nurse for State Farm Insurance and retired in September 1997. We have done some traveling and enjoy the benefits of retirement.  I would love to hear from all of you and hope to see you soon

Thompson, Zandra Chamley (DECEASED 1-16-2009) . ...I met my husband, Gary, while working summers at Mt. Rushmore during my college days, and after graduation, me from SDSU and him from USD, we married and went into teaching.  (I wonder if Florence Bruhn has any idea how many of us she was a role model for ?)... A number of moves later, we ended up in Adrian, MN, and it became "home" for almost 35 years!  Gary taught PE and Health and was Athletic Director. Over the years he coached just about everything.....football, basketball, track, and even girls' volleyball, when our 2 girls reached junior high.  I spent most of my time teaching high school English, but finished out my career in the high school library, automating our collection.

After retirement, in 1997, we moved to Sioux Falls, close to our girls and their families, and have thoroughly enjoyed being close enough to take in the grandchildren's athletic events and concerts, etc.  There are four of them......the oldest, and only boy, will graduate from high school this year!  After living in a really small town for so many years, we are loving SF and the opportunities it offers! We are loving retirement.....doing lots of traveling, volunteering, snow birding (we leave for Florida next week! ), and just being able to do whatever we want!! I keep busy, too, with needlework, quilting, reading, bridge, etc.

Kudos to you, Kermit, for putting this all together....it's really neat to find out what everyone has been doing all these years....will make a 50 year reunion just that much more meaningful!!! Zan

Thronson, Marlys Fie ...20 years ago

Timm, Marilyn Caddle ...Marilyn finished undergraduate work except for 1 course in 3 years so the last year of college substitute taught then taught math in Sioux Falls to gifted children taking Advanced Calculus then to the other extreme of problem children who didn’t understand Math. My degree was in Math and Physics so when I graduated with my class I went to Washington, DC to work as a Scientific Systems Engineer for IBM (I don’t think that title exists today) I actually worked with programming on prototype scientific computers for the National Security Agency, developed and taught some of the programming courses for IBM's scientific computers. The technology in those prototypes became public about 15 years later. Had some crazy experiences like leaving my confidential program on a train on the way from NY to Poughkeepsie and had to get back on and then jump from the train as it headed out to Albany. I had great times traveling to NY and back a lot.

I met Andy at IBM in DC and we were married enroute to Japan where I only continued working for a short time. We bought our first home there but within a year moved to Okinawa. Our oldest daughter was born in Okinawa. We traveled around the world with her when she was 6 months old visiting in China, Thailand, Egypt, India, Italy, Greece, Germany and Scotland. After three months we curtailed our trip because we were tired. We settled back in Washington DC area for about two years and then headed back to Paris, France when our younger daughter was about 4 months old. IBM really meant moving those first few years. We barely settled in a suburb of Paris when DeGaulle kicked out NATO which was the customer Andy was servicing. I was a Mom who didn’t stay at home much but tried to learn the languages of the countries we live in. We moved to the edge of the Black Forest in Germany and then moved back to DC where we stayed until our younger daughter was in college. During those years I did a lot of volunteer work and then decided to completely change directions so went back to school and became a CPA. – I worked in a regional accounting firm of about 40 people as a tax manager until the decision came to either become a partner or go back to Europe. I chose to retire and so Andy and I went back to Germany, this time the Taunus Mountains close to Frankfurt. My firm in Alexandria, Virginia flew me back to the US for a few months to help during the tax season but that wasn’t my idea of fun. I then joined a lawyer in Frankfurt and set my own terms and helped with expatriate tax problems We traveled a lot during the 1986 to 1990 time period. We were in East Berlin two weeks before the wall fell and were in Prague the weekend that government fell which was a really exciting time. We managed to see a lot of the eastern European countries and this summer we went back to see some of the changes. Living in Germany allowed us to travel a lot. When Andy went on business I went for fun. Twice a year we visited Italy for two weeks and the experiences are beyond description.

Coming back to the US we settled back in the Washington DC area and just far enough from my firm that I could stay retired—not for long as they merged and had an office less than a mile for our house. I worked part- time for a couple of years but most of my time was spent on a national Lutheran board as treasurer and traveling to Chicago twice a year even though most of the work was done via computer and e-mail.

We investigated areas to retire and decided Knoxville, TN offered what we required. Andy sings with the 200 auditioned Choral Society and we have season tickets to the opera and the UT play series. We are also members of the Zoo and the Art Museum which has an excellent Jazz program every Friday. Next week we are going to reminisce at a Dave Brubeck concert. I facilitate the retired group called “The Top of The Hill Gang” for our church – (that group loves to eat and drink), serve as treasurer of the endowment fund and teach confirmation. I also am a member of the Knoxville Nonpareil, a Red Hat society that has a web site. We have no rules other than wearing purple with red hats. Next month we are visiting the Jack Daniels Distillery – we hire a bus so have a designated driver, besides, they don’t give samples.

For our 30th anniversary we took 6 weeks and traveled to New Zealand and Australia since we hadn’t been there in any of our travels. Now we are planning a visit to St. Petersburg, Russia this summer for its 300th anniversary.

Our daughters and their husbands live in Virginia, one in the mountains and one by the beach. Our younger daughter just gave up her partnership in a law firm to be a stay at home Mom and the older one is also a stay at home Mom

Where in the world did 50 years go? Time flies when you are having fun.

Tritz, Henry ...Deceased... Obituary

True, Patricia Ptak ...After high school graduation I attended Dakota Wesleyan University for 4 years earning a BA degree in Education. I taught Kdgn in Marshall, MN for 1959-60. Loved the age, the children were great, because at that age they still think Mothers and teachers are great people.

In May of 1960 I married LaValle Ptak of Mitchell and we headed for New Jersey where he was employed. I spent the summer on the beach (teachers get summers off!!). What a deal, and taught Kdgn that fall in New Jersey. I had to learn a whole new English language for the East. We did many trips to New York, and even got together with Donna Austin Cherrier. We had a great time. What a wonderful experience for a South Dakota girl in the Big City………the city of live plays, etc.

LaVelle got a new job in ‘61’ in Chicago so thus a move to the “Windy City”. We spent 13 years there and our son and daughter we both born while we lived in Chicago. I also started a popular nursery school for 3, 4 and 5’ year old children in our church. I had two great teachers and learned much. Our daughter was one of the older students and loved it. July 4th in Chicago is even cold… even with a fire in the fireplace. We moved to warm and sunny Phoenix in 1973. We have enjoyed the growing Phoenix area ever since.

We became very involved in the Crisis Pregnancy Centers with LaVelle doing adoptions and me working on our Gala that grossed a half million dollars last year to help fund the work of 3 centers. It is very rewarding to see a crisis turn into a blessing. We are also involved in our South Side Mexican Church…(they speak English or I’d be lost) teaching marriage classes, encouraging the younger to get their GED’s, high school and college educations and preparing engaged singles for marriage.

We are truly blessed with 5 grandchildren who live across the wash from us…and three more in Seattle, WA with our son and his wife.
The Army moved them from Hawaii to Seattle—what a come down weather wise! Burr

We are looking forward to being at the reunion in September and seeing all of my classmates…Sounds Great...Patty

Vockrodt, Jacqueline Spangler

Wagner, Henry
...After graduation I spent some time as a Fuller Brush salesman which was a lot of fun but didn't bode well for a bright future. I was interested in working with data processing equipment as a result of a field trip (Herb Teske took our English class) to the Midland National Life Insurance Company where they showed us the punched card operations. The Navy had a program that allowed you to pick your field of work and I enlisted in March 1956. Following training in Illinois and Maryland, I was assigned to the Naval Air Station in Glenview, IL working in a small data processing installation.

Maxine Kemp (class of 1956) and I were married in August 1957. Our first two children were born while stationed in Glenview. We were transferred to the Naval Aviation Supply Office in Philadelphia in Oct 1959. This was a great assignment as the Navy was beginning to use some of the early IBM computers. Three more children were born while we were stationed in Philadelphia.
Following my discharge from the Navy in 1962, we moved to Seattle, Wash and worked for Boeing. The job was not a lot of fun and I was able to return to the Aviation Supply Office in Philadelphia as a civilian government service employee. In 1965 I accepted a job with Sears Roebuck in Philadelphia. I stayed with Sears until 1980 with assignments in Philadelphia, North Bergen, NJ and Chicago. In 1980 we moved to Washington DC where I worked for May Department Stores Company. In 1984 we were transferred to St. Louis, Mo.

During all this time, Maxine held various jobs when time permitted. She started programming while we were in Washington, DC and retired from CitiCorp which coincided with my retirement from May Company in 2003.

In July 2003 we sold the house in St. Louis and moved to the Lake of the Ozarks in central Missouri. It's great.

The children live in Waterloo, WI Prince Frederick, MD. Geneva, IL and two live in St. Louis. Between them they have blessed us with 18 grandchildren. A photo is attached for the Project “55” album. This is Maxine and me standing on the deck at our home at the Lake of the Ozarks.

We are looking forward to the reunion in 2005. Sincerely appreciate all the work you and Dick Mondloch are doing to collect and share information on the Class of '55.

Ward, Shirley West ...Shirley and Duane have lived at their current address for over 30 years. They live on 167th St. just a mile south of highway 20….Duane retired in 1994 after 30+ years working at the Watertown Municipal Utilities Department. Shirley retired in 1991 following 13 years with the Hamlin-Codington County Bookmobile.

Shirley and Duane have been married for over 46 years. They have three children: Kim (45), Tim (43) and Todd (41).
They have two grandchildren, Erica (21) and Derrick (14)

Shirley did not make it to the 31st reunion but did get and enjoyed the Mini Arrow. She hopes to make it to the 50th reunion. She says “God willing, we’ll all still be here …One never knows”…(Shirley does have e-mail via her son’s computer…so there could be some delays)

Wiese, Vernida Grant ...see Jim & Vernida Grant

Wellner, Audrey Doggett ...I left Watertown in the summer of 1953 after our sophomore year and completed high school in Greensboro, NC, where I still live. I worked for an insurance company as manager of their group insurance accounting department for 26 years. At age 42 I married for the first time and at age 43 had our first child. At age 45 our second child was born and I have been a stay-at-home mom since.

Our son will graduate this spring (2003) from the University of NC at Chapel Hill and our daughter is currently taking a leave from her studies at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY. My husband spent his career in industrial and commercial real estate and is retired.

Although I missed the last two years of school with you, I have many memories of our kindergarten through 10th grade years. I have subscribed for several years to the Watertown Public Opinion and enjoy keeping up with local news. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.

Wulff, JoElaine Wulff ...Can’t believe the words “50th” reunion are being bantered around. JoElaine and her husband have 11 grandchildren between them…live at a lake someplace in or around Pelican Rapids, MN…will spend the winter in the south and still be in the US….Have an RV to use as a summer guest house and a winter home in the south…

Things have been happening too quickly for me. I was single for so many years that I had made up my mind life was going to be that way for me (which, by the way was not so bad). My children grew up, several years apart and finally I was on my own. College was something I thought was for the smartest of the class. I decided to give it a go--I graduated before either of my daughters. YES!!

A few years of Human Resources and a business of my own in Pelican Rapids added up to years and all of a sudden I'm old…YEEKS!... Thank God for my new life and husband... we are so satisfied.. Remodeling the house at the lake and traveling in our RV with two little dogs that keep moving our booties when we're not sure about wanting to go outside.

We have eleven (11) grandchildren between the two of us to be proud of and keep up with....I hope you all will feel like me and no jerk shows up at the reunion with a facelift.

Zamow, LaVonne Byarlay ...Reports that she doesn’t get back to Watertown much. Parents have passed away and her brother manages the farming operations. LaVonne likes the idea of a 50th reunion...(maybe it will get her back to Watertown)

Here is more…Things I know for sure since 1955…

Changing addresses 20 times is a moving experience. Dirty Rice is delicious. The Pan American highway in Ecuador has no rules or traffic signs. Costa Rico has wonderful, hospitable people but I can’t say the same for the roads. It is not possible to sleep through a volcano eruption. High school Spanish can get you cold relief. Afrin is “Afrin” in Equador and only 75 cents.

Driving a Simca 1000 in Germany is a herr raising vacation. Raising a Yuppie, a traditionalist and a generation Xer begets you three yuppies in training, two clones of a mommy and daddy, and one grandflower child.

Having a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law over six foot tall trumps the short Zamow gene and gets grandma and grandpa boxes to stand on for the family photos.

Still working eight hours a week for love and money. Teaching ESL is a challenge and a delight that I can’t give up. Hate to type so any mistakes are the fault of the computer (and or the editor)…Love, see you in a ’05.
